This Week’s Destination: Langkawi, Malaysia

Published by Travel Guy under Uncategorized

langkawi.jpg

Welcome to Malaysia! We had a tough enough time covering Costa Rica so we decided not to try and cover an entire country ever again. There’s just too much information to siphon though. We decided to take a trip over to Asia and from what we’ve heard Malaysia is one of the most beautiful countries on the continent. You can certainly check out the hustle and bustle of a major city such as Kuala Lumpur but we figured you wanted to go on more of a “vacation” in the classic sense of the word: sand, sun, surf and relaxation. While Malaysia has plenty of regions to choose from, we heard that Langkawi is one of the best. I have a feeling we’ll be covering another Island in Malaysia in the future but for now, let’s take a look. By the way, feel free to visit these couple of sites to get a better picture of Langkawi: Langkawi Online and Discover Langkawi. You can also check out Wikipedia’s Langkawi Page. On to the hotels!

Accomodations

#1 - The Datai Langkawi

datai-langkawi-3.jpg

The Datai is hands down listed as the best luxury hotel in Langkawi, and possibly all of Malaysia. And even taking it a step further possibly one of the nicest in all of Asia according to Forbes. It’s pretty tough to find any faults in this place according to some reviews we’ve read. You know it’s not bad when you’ve read the phrase “this is the best hotel we’ve ever stayed in” multiple times.

#2- Casa Del Mar Langkawi

We kind of like Casa Del Mar’s website. It’s got a fun feel to it. But let’s not stop there. The hotel actually means “home by the sea” in English and with only 31 rooms it’s small enough to feel that way. We can describe it our way but read this description and you’ll be tempted to stay there.

#3 - Four Seasons Resort Langkawi

Wait a minute here folks. I think we’re going to set a precedent moving forward. We are fully exempt from having to give a full description of a Four Seasons hotel. Let’s just say they always deliver. But just in case, take a look at their Langkawi Page. Man that place pampers it’s guests. Nothing wrong with that! Other than the couple that got attacked by a dog (true story), here are some great reviews.

#4 - The Andaman Langkawi

This hotel is situated in more of a tropical atmosphere. There’s beautiful mountains surrounding the clear blue water of the Andaman sea. Oh, there’s Golf too! Andman’s Site does no justice to the actual physical appearance of this gem.

#5 - Tanjung Rhu Resort

The front page of their website makes me think of a Corona commercial and I get the feeling staying at the Tanjung Rhu Resort would give me the experience that Corona tries to make us think of when seeing those ads. Malaysia Travel gives a great review and description.

Restaurants

You’re not exactly going to be finding the classic 5 star dining ambiance type of establishments here (unless you stay in the hotels). Rather you’re going to be getting a real taste of Langkawi. Both the hotels and local places offer up a great experience.

#1 - Champor Champor - Pantai, Cenang

812578-champor_champor_langkawi-pulau_langkawi.jpg

The Champor Champor is always the first to come up in any search we conduct on restaurants not only in Langkawi but Malaysia as a whole. Langkawi Online gives a great description of one of the first Asian Fusion restaurants in Malaysia. All five star reviews from our account!

More Pictures:

champor-champor.jpg champor-champor-2.jpg champor-champor-3.jpg

#2 - Beach Garden Resort

You’re going to have to take our word on this one. We searched over 20 websites and publications and while to this day we still don’t know the name of this restaurant, everyone says to try “The Restaurant” at the Beach Garden Resort. Here’s a look at the website for a description.

#3 - Nam Restaurant

We searched for a while for this one. It’s tough finding a restaurant on more than one site but somehow, in some way Igougo always delivers. Here is the review.

#4 - Yong Long - Kuah Town

“The best Chinese Restaurant in town.” At leas that’s what we hear. Give it a shot.

#5 - Orkid Ria Seafood Restaurent

“If you drive along Pantai Cenang in the evening, you cannot miss this brightly lit eatery. A stone’s throw from Pelangi Resort, the place fills up at sundown. The fast and attentive service and the tasty, reasonably priced dishes must be why the crowd keeps coming back.”

*Be sure to check out some of the virtual tourist choices. You can also check out langkawi online’s picks

Fun Things To Do

#1 - Langkawi Cable Car at Mat Cincang Mountain

langkawi-cable-car-2.jpg

The Oriental Village in the upper northwest of Langkawi Island, near Pantai Kok, is the entrance for the cable-car ride, which takes visitors all the way up to Mount Mat Cincang, Langkawi’s second highest peak. For more information Langkawi Info describes this amazing excursion.

More Pictures:

langkawi-cable-car-1.jpg langkawi-cable-car-4.jpg langkawi-cable-car-3.jpg

#2 - Waterfalls - Durian Perangin Falls

From Langkawi Beaches site: Durian Perangin Waterfall is located in Raya Mountain Nature Park area. This waterfall has 12 levels of water cascade. There is also a 5-km-jungle track to the top of Raya Mountain with another 5-km-jungle track from there to Lubuk Sembilang

#3 - Pantai Cenang Beach

Remember those Corona commercials I talked about? Enough said. Check out these photos and you’ll see why you have to visit. There is also a dedicated website for this island.

#4 - Underwater World - Telaga Tujuh

This is another fantastic waterfall and underwater site. Read more at Langkawi Geo Park’s site. Here are some reviews from Yahoo Subscribers.

#5 - Pulau Payar Marine Park

From a Yahoo reviewer: “The marine park comprises four islands, namely Pulau Payar , Pulau Lembu, Pulau Segantang and Pulau Kaca. A ferry trip from Kuah takes around 45 minutes. The islands are surrounded by well-protected coral reefs that are home to numerous species of underwater creatures.” Get the snorkels ready! Feel free to check out Pulau’s Website as well.

*We’re out of breath. Enjoy your stay in Langkawi!

This Week’s Destination: Montreal, Canada

Published by Travel Guy under Uncategorized

montreal.jpg

Welcome to Montreal! Or should we say “Bienvenue a Montreal!” I wish we could put those little accent things where their supposed to be in the word “Montreal.” Anyway, for this week’s trip destination we’ve selected a city that is rich in history and culture, yet took a turn in the 60’s to create a fun, modern, bustling city. Montreal has a great story about it’s heritage and you can feel free to read more about it on one of the Montreal Tourism sites we found. In order to learn more about the city you can also visit Tourism Montreal, Ville De Montreal, and Montreal.com. And don’t worry, you can translate all the sites into English :) So on to the hotels!

Accomodations

We actually took a bit of a move away from Trip Advisor on this one. Instead we asked friends, family and other people on the web to find out where we might stay in this wonderful city. Of course we still consulted with the big boys as well.

#1 - Hotel Le St James

hotel-le-st-james-1.jpg

We have heard this is the finest place to stay in Montreal. Built back in 1870 this hotel has plenty of history. And if you guys read anything about Montreal (if not we’ll tell you) the hotel is located in Old Montreal (Montreal is essentially split up into an Old, more European styled section and a new, modern American style section). It’s a perfect combination of elegance and proximity to all of the finest dining and attractions in Montreal. Be sure to visit the Hotel’s Website as well as check out some of Trip Advisor’s reviews. There are also some more pictures to be found on Hotel.com’s site.

More Pictures:

hotel-le-st-james-3.jpg hotel-le-st-james-2.jpg hotel-le-st-james-4.jpg

#2 - Le Saint Sulpice

Another great pick in Old Montreal, Le Saint Sulpice is a classy and fine establishment. The hotel has a beautiful courtyard and the rooms get up to over 1000 square feet in size, most having a fireplace. Not to mention 24 room service for those long nights at the casino! Be sure to check out Le Saint’s Website. Also, Expedia’s Average Review was a 4.9 out of 5. Not bad!

#3 - Sofitel Montreal

The Sofitel chain of hotels is an excellent network of fine hotels, and when you see the one in Montreal it does not disappoint. It’s considered one of the most popular downtown hotels and is located in the heart of “Golden Square Mile.” Please visit Sofitel’s Website for more information. FYI, it was rated #6 on Trip Advisor. Here are some Yahoo Travel Reviews.

#4 - The W Montreal

Who doesn’t like the W? Aside from them having reasonably small rooms in the NYC branches, I can’t find anyone who didn’t think highly of a W hotel. Starwood Resorts has gotten hotels down to a science. Just take our words for it will ya? Fine, visit the site and check out a review or two. You really have to push us don’t you….

#5 - Hotel Gault

Look, we’ve been through a lot together and if you don’t trust us by now then we just don’t know what to say. Would you check out the Hotel Gault please? Man I’m in a funny mood today.

* You didn’t think we wouldn’t let you know that there’s a Ritz Carlton in Montreal did you? For a full list of hotels be sure to check out Trip Advisors 143 of them. On with the restaurants!

Restaurants

#1 - Toque

toque-restaurant-1.JPG

We’re not going to argue with Zagats Survey here. In fact Toque was the very first restaurant Zagats surveyed in Montreal and it still remains at the top. Every single time we typed in something like “Best restaurants in Montreal” Toque popped up at the top. The style of food is called “Post Nouvelle” and we hear the portions are hearty. We read a great review on Frommer’s and we suggest you check it out too. Here is Toque’s Website.

More Pictures:

toque-restaurant-2.jpg toque-restaurant-3.png toque-restaurant-4.jpg

#2 - The Beaver Club

No, it’s not a Strip Club! Although if a Strip Club had top 5 food we’d definitely put it in our recommendations :) OK let’s get back to reality for a second. Located in the Fairview Elizabeth Hotel, The Beaver Club has been known to serve some of the best Martinis around. Their food isn’t too bad either. Bring out the checkbook though. Here’s the Fairmont’s Beaver Site.

#3 - Le Club Chasse Et Peche

There’s no sign! How do we find this place? No worries it’s right near the Notre Dame Basilica (which we’ll mention later). Check out the Montreal Mirror Review. Sounds delicious.

#4 - L’Express

Dubbed the “Heart and Soul” of Montreal L’Express apparently lives up to it’s name. Here’s something we found in a review: “Take Montreal and pour it into a pot. Slowly turn up the heat and start reducing. As the city bubbles away, we are down to the Latin Quarter, to rue Saint-Denis. Keep simmering until we have reduced Montreal to its essence, a dozen or so long blocks between Mount Royal and René-Lévesque. Now, in the final stage of demi-glace, the heart and soul of Montreal emerges. It is the restaurant L’Express”

#5 - Moishes

Who wants some steak? Travel Guy is a big steak eater so naturally I’m gonna be putting a steak joint on here when I can. Moishe’s was rated a top steakhouse in a number of publications and from what we hear, get the Porterhouse.

*We know, we know, five restaurants can’t possibly cover all that great French food. The sites listed in our first paragraph have great directories for food so be sure to check them out.
And where would we be without some fun activities.

Fun Things to Do

#1 - Old Montreal

old-montreal-4.jpg

You may have noticed that some of the hotels we listed are in this amazing little part of Montreal. One of the first things we hear when someone asks, “where should I go in Montreal?” is “You have to check out Old Montreal.” Old Montreal is the place that looks very European and well…old. The streets are filled with Cobble Stone and you feel like you’re straight out of a history book: old pubs, galleries, things to do on the street. It’s a must see. We decided that Wikipedia has a great description of Old Montreal.

More Pictures:

old-montreal-2.jpg old-montreal-1.jpg old-montreal-3.jpg

#2 - Montreal Botanical Gardens

22,000. That’s the number of plant species going on in this amazing site. 30 gardens? 10 exhibition greenhouses? Perfect for couples and families. It’s a must see in Montreal. For more information check out Ville Montreal

#3 - Notre Dame Basilica

We’re always up for a good church you know? Seriously though, some of the architecture on churches around the world is truly breathtaking and this Basilica is no exception. If only to take a peek, make sure your eyes take a look at this piece of art. Here’s more information on the Notre Dame Basilica.

#4 - Montreal Casino

Do we even need a description here? It’s a casino. It’s a big one. Find it. Best of luck when you get there.

#5 - The Underground City

The Underground City is a set of complexes both above and below ground and is considered the largest underground complex in the world. We went to Wikipedia for more info on this mammoth construction.

Honorable Mention: Montreal Zoo, Olympic Stadium

*Well, we hope you take a visit to Montreal. It’s not just a bunch of mountaineers and “eh, eh, eh” stuff you know. Canada’s got some rich culture, good eats, and plenty to do. Enjoy your stay!

This Week’s Destination: Costa Rica, Central America

Published by Travel Guy under Uncategorized

costa-rica.jpg

Have you ever walked on a beautiful beach path and looked at the trees? You look up and it’s kind of amazing. Imagine those same trees filled with little monkeys and a Caribbean type of wind blowing. At the same time you feel the moisture of the forest and yet can see beautiful clear water. It’s like tropical forest meets amazing wildlife, meets unreal beaches. That’s what it’s like to be in Costa Rica. Although geographically a small country, Costa Rica is one of the most biologically diverse regions on the planet. Visitors encounter oceans, beaches, rivers, mountains, and an abundance of good times! Bear in mind that Costa Rica is not a small place and it hosts a number of cities. This post is a general guideline to the entire region. Enjoy these three sites for more travel and tourist information: Visit Costa Rica, Info Costa Rica, and Costa Rica’s Homepage. On to the hotels!

* Bear in mind Costa Rica is a large place and not all hotels are located in the same region. The area will be listed after the hotel name (where the comma is :) )

Accommodations

#1 -Los Altos De Eros, Tamarindo

los-altos-de-eros-3.jpg

This hotel is magnificent. There’s really no other way to put it. In practically every area of the hotel you’ll have a glorious view of mountains, beaches, trees, cliffs, you name it. It’s truly a gem in Costa Rica. The rooms are gorgeous and packed with state of the art electronics, as well as beautiful furniture. You really can’t ask for much more in a hotel. It makes a vacation to Costa Rica that much better. Check out these reviews and be sure to look at the traveler’s photos on that page. Be sure to also visit Los Altos De Eros’ Official Website. Did we mention it was a five star hotel? We should have!

More Pictures:

los-altos-de-eros-2.jpg los-altos-de-eros-1.jpg los-altos-de-eros-4.jpg

#2 - Casa Chameleon, Mal Pais

Chosen as one of the “Best 101 Hotels in the World” by Conde Nast Publications’ Tatler Travel Guide for 2006, Casa Chameleon is a favorite with honeymooners and celebrities to relax and unwind. It also received a 2008 nomination for a Best Bargain award. Check out Chameleon’s Website.

#3 - Hotel Silencio Del Campo

Located just four miles from La Fortuna National Park, Silencio is a very scenic, cabin like place. You will not believe the rates either. Depending on when you stay there, two people can stay for under 100 dollars a night! It’s definitely worth checking out. Here is the Silencio Website and over 80 Traveler Reviews.

#4 - Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo

Do we even have to make a review here? Does the Four Seasons ever disappoint? We are sure that some of you will question why we put this hotel at number four. Is it the “nicest and most luxurious” of the hotels listed here? Of course it is! We almost feel bad about having to place it here but once again, we have our reasons. We’re talking FULL experience here. But trust us, you can’t go wrong with this hotel.

#5 - Issimo Suites

The first words we read while doing any kind of search for Issimo Suites was “honeymoon.” Filled with beautiful scenery, almost babying type services you can either grab a quick massage, go in a whirlpool, or take a walk and be in the middle of a forest. It’s truly incredible. Here’s some reviews for you.

*For a full list of hotels (listed by location) be sure to check out Trip Advisor’s Costa Rica Page.

Restaurants

This was not easy as Costa Rica is an entire country! However we’ve scanned the likes of Yahoo! Travel, Igougo, Trip Advisor, Food and Wine, Travel and Leisure and a whole host of other sites to try and narrow it down. We’ll list the restaurant and city. Don’t worry, after these five you’ll have links to plenty more restaurants.

#1 - Bakea, Barroso Amon, San Jose

bakea-4.jpg

Don’t let that exterior fool you. It’s beautiful in there. It’s like eating in a house! Located in a historic home in the Barrio Amon district, the restaurant spreads across many small rooms, each uniquely decorated. One room even serves as an art gallery. The cuisine has a touch of classical French, but uses local ingredients and flavors for a unique taste of Costa Rica. Here is Bakea’s Website and her is a Frommer’s Review.

More Pictures:

bakea-3.jpg bakea-1.jpg bakea-2.jpg

#2 - Ginger, Playa Hermosa

If you go to Ginger expecting a very “normal” offering of cuisine then you probably picked the wrong place. First off, you’re 20 feet elevated in the restaurant. It’s almost as if you’re in a tree house. Many consider it to be the “most creative” restaurant in all of Costa Rica. Definitely check it out as well as a Frommer’s Review and an Igougo Review.

#3- Miss Junie’s, Tortugero

For those unfamiliar with Tortugero you might want to check out this website. Tortugero is an amazing forest packed with beautiful scenery and fun things to do. So where does one eat? Why Miss Junie’s of course. We love this quote: “This isn’t a restaurant, it’s a place of pilgrimage.” Miss Junie’s takes the prize for Caribbean cuisine in Costa Rica. Enjoy!

#4 - Mirador Ram Luna, San Jose

We consulted Yahoo Travel for this find. Nothing but 4 and 5 star reviews for this restaurant located in the beautiful hills of Escazu. The views are breathtaking and the food ain’t so bad either :) Check out more reviews here.

#5 - Casa de Dona Lela, San Jose

Another Yahoo Travel pick, get ready for some steak! Check out these reviews

* Clearly we could give you a boatload more restaurants but narrowing this down to five took long enough. If a restaurant should be on here, please email us and for the restaurants that didn’t make it? We sincerely apologize! For more choices you can check out Costaricanrestaurants.net’s list. You can also check out Igogu’s Review’s List.

Fun Things To Do

Given how much fun Costa Rica is, and given the sheer amount of things you can do, we felt it was unfair to assign ratings to the activities here. However, someone’s gotta do it! We’ve listed five of our picks, and despite our preference, we’ll let you decide.

1. Arenal Volcano

arenal-volcano-1.jpg

This is clearly a favorite of nearly everyone who’s traveled to Costa Rica. There is practically an unlimited amount of things to do in Arenal. We highly recommend the Arenal Hanging Bridge Tour. If you want, you can just look at the volcano and it’s adventure enough. Check out Arenal’s Website and you won’t run out of amazing things to do. Have fun!

arenal-volcano-4.jpg arenal-volcano-3.jpg arenal-volcano-2.jpg

2. La Paz Waterfall Gardens

Let’s head on over to Varablanca to get a look at some of the most gorgeous waterfalls we’ve ever seen. And if you think you’re just looking at water, trees and mist, well you’d be right :) However, you’ll also see tons of wildlife and get a chance to see a beautiful lake. Taking a tour is probably the easiest way to get around. Here’s the waterfall website.

3. Venado Caves

Even though we’ve already mentioned the Arenal Volcano we felt that Venado Caves deserved its own spot up here. We got this excerpt from a Costa Rica Adventure site. “Dating back over 7 million years, the Venado Caves are the direct result of water currents penetrating and passing through the surrounding limestone rocks. Over time, the continual flow of water opened crevasses and forced sediments to flow throughout the caves, leaving in it’s wake an endless network of deep tunnels.” For more info check out Arenal’s Caves page.

4. Cahuita National Park

Just another one of many amazing parks located in Costa Rica. However, Cahuita is more of the beach variety. From the Costa Rican Bureau: “Cahuita National Park is located just south of the town of Cahuita, about 43 kilometers south of Limon, on the Carribean coastline in one of the most beautiful and scenic regions in Costa Rica. Its main attractions are the white sand beaches fringed with endless coconut trees, a calm sea of transparent waters and the coral reefs offshore.” Here’s another site for some information.

5. Blue Dolphin Catamarans

Ugh! How boring! Just cruising around amazingly gorgeous Caribbean seas and getting a chance to snorkel, relax, drink, dive, and do everything you can do in any tropical setting? I guess once you’ve been to a Volcano it’s nice to just chill. Here’s Blue Dolphin’s website so enjoy the seas.

Boy does this country seem incredible. Costa Rica is a big place with a bunch of cities so again, as we stated earlier, take this as a general guideline. We’d love to hear your feedback on your experiences in Costa Rica. Be sure to email us, comment, or hit that subscribe button at the top to be notified of all our editorials. Tune in next week for Montreal!

This Week’s Destination: Mykonos, Greece

Published by Travel Guy under Uncategorized

mykonos1.jpg

And we finally have Europe in our sights! Let’s get on over to Greece shall we? While we can sum up Mykonos as best as we can, Mykonos Web does it better. “Mykonos is a grand example of unique cycladic architecture set around a picturesque fishing-village bay. Totally whitewashed organic cube-like buildings fit closely together to form a kind of haphazard maze of narrow alley ways and streets. The earthen colors of the bare hills which surround the town’s gleaming whiteness is set between the aura of an incredibly blue sky and even deeper blue sparkling sea. Its many well preserved windmills and hundreds of tiny red-roofed churches adds a flavor of culture and custom to the scene, enhanced even further by many museums and the historical ancient site of nearby Delos. Together with being friendly and open people, the locals have a healthy understanding of what it means to have a good time.”

Sounds great to us! And by the way, of all places in Greece, we’ve heard that Mykonos has an incredible blend of things to do both for a youthful and more “aged” crowd. It’s amazing when all at once crazy kids are partying it up on Spring Break and families are visiting historic landmarks. We linked to Mykonos Web before and here are a few more sites to help you with your research on Mykonos: Mykonos Greece and Mykonos Biz. On to the hotels!

Accommodations

#1 - Mykonos Grand Hotel and Resort

mykons-grand-hotel-1.jpg

We were absolutely blown away at just the pictures of this place, but that and Trip Advisor Reviews alone is not why we chose it as a number one. Nearly every website we visited mentioned this hotel and we’ve even spoken to some friends who have stayed there. We will tell you it’s kind of a honeymoon paradise but the hotel is certainly family friendly. Did we tell you how new this place is? It was built in 2001 and remodeled in 2006 (not that it needed it). It’s a perfect blend of old architecture with every modern convenience you can imagine. By the way, here is the Mykonos Grand Website.

More Pictures:

mykonos-grand-hotel-2.jpg mykonos-grand-hotel-3.jpg mykonos-grand-hotel-4.jpg

#2 - Petasos Beach Resort and Spa

Is it a surprise that the Petasos Beach Resort and Spa is from the same family as the Mykonos Grand? Of course not. Similar to our St. Maarten post last week, we just couldn’t give the Petasos the number one nod. It’s just too pricey. Again though, if you can pony up the cash, say on a special week (hint hint honeymoon) then it’s well worth it. Here’s some couple reviews.

#3 - Cavo Tagoo Hotel

We had way too much fun here. There are just too many nice spots in Mykonos. Three 5 stars in a row? Well, Cavo Tagoo is deserving of the rating. We found this little gem on Great Hotels of the World. Wow, what a site. There’s some amazing finds on there.

#4 - Mykonos Grace

Get ready for some soothing music on the Mykonos Grace website. We practically fell asleep while smiling :) If the experience is anything like that then I think you’re in for a good time at the real place. It’s nearly impossible to surf to another website without at least checking out the facilities page on theirs. Here’s some more great reviews.

#5 - Royal Myconian Hotel and Thalasso Spa Hotel

The Royal Myconian Hotel is yet another hotel that is part of a great network, this one called “The Leading Hotels of the World.” Have a blast!

*It was not easy coming up with a list of only five hotels. Of all the cities in Greece it’s almost impossible to find a hotel that ISN’T wonderful in Mykonos. Be sure to check out another 150 of them!

Restaurants

#1 - Sea Satin Market of Caprice

sea-satin-market-2.jpg

We went with a “trendy” one here. Why? We felt of all the restaurants this one represented the Mykonos experience best. The most trendy restaurant in Mykonos for at least the last four years, Sea Satin is strategically placed bellow the Windmills facing the sunset and the Little Venice. “The Sea Satin sets out its tables and counters with the fish and local vegetables as if it were a street market. Everything reminds you of holidays, while the service is very fast and there is a “bar” mood. Excellent cooked vegetables, perfect French fries, very fresh sea food, fresh fish and juicy T-bone steak cooked on charcoal.
After midnight, the volume of the -Greek- music goes up and the party really gets going.”

More Pictures:

sea-satin-market-1.jpg sea-satin-market-3.jpg

#2 - Matsuhisa Mykonos

Perhaps you guys will recognize the name “Nobu.” Anyone who’s had this Sushi would have to understand that it certainly won’t fail in Mykonos. “Matsuhisa Mykonos is Nobu’s latest venue worldwide. Opened initially like a restaurant promotion with the name “Nobu at Belvedere” on summer season 2003 and from the summer season 2004 operating like “Matsuhisa Mykonos”. Legendary and signature dishes such as Black Cod with Den Miso, Tiradito, New Style Sashimi are available among others in Matsuhisa Mykonos menu.” Sounds great to us! Please check out the Belvedere hotel website for more info.

#3 - Phillipi Restaurant

“During the 1970’s the tourist development of Mykonos began. At that time Philippis Kontizas opened the “Philippi” Restaurant, one of the first restaurants that opened to serve the constantly increasing number of tourists.Inspiration for this restaurant, which Philippi opened in 1974 in a garden at the heart of Mykonos town, has been the family’s old vegetable garden and the love for tradition. His mother, a traditional Mykonian cook stood by him along with numerous Mykonian recipes.Today, it holds a place among the 250 best restaurants in the world in the same spirit of hospitality and quality. In the beautiful garden or the indoor dining area one can enjoy their drink or taste Greek and International cuisine and, of course, Mykonian dishes.”

#4 - Medallion (Another Philippi Restaurant)

We had to take Igougo’s word for this one. $4.95?!?! This CAN’T be true. Check out rest of this review.

#5 - Kiki’s

Here’s a little snippet from Food and Wine: “A taverna without a sign or phone number, Kiki’s is perched above the beach and hidden behind the trees that surround it. The simple menu includes Greek salads and the fish of the day. During peak lunch hours (from 3 to 5 p.m. in Mykonos), the outdoor tables fill up quickly.” No signs huh? Good luck finding it but if you do…enjoy!

* We must admit that we had a tough time finding these five places. The internet is somewhat short on info about Mykonos restaurants but we’re quite confident if you choose any of these five that you’ll have a great meal and great time. Oh and by the way, if that doesn’t work for you, here’s a selection of over 100 Mykonos Restaurants.

Fun Things to Do

#1 - Delos Island

delos-island-1.jpg

From what we hear, if you’re in Mykonos then you’ve got to travel the few miles southwest and visit this historical site. Think Athens but on a smaller scale. You can’t help but to be somewhat serious when thinking about the inhabitants that once lived in this amazing place. It’s a must see. We thank Cyclades Orbit for these wonderful pictures and information on Delos Island. And be sure to check out this site as well.

More Pictures:

delos-island-4.jpg delos-island-3.jpg delos-island-2.jpg

#2 - Church of Paraportiani

Ever been to St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City? OK, this Church looks nothing like it :) However the point is that Churches are a fantastic tourist attraction and Paraportiani is no exception. One of the most famous of the 365 churches and chapels on Mykonos (one for each day of the year), the sloping, whitewashed conglomeration has been described as a “confectioner’s dream gone mad.” To see some of these beautiful pictures, go to Trip Advisor’s Church of Paraportiani page.

#3 - Windmills of Kato Myli

Not only are the windmills an excellent site to see but they are a lifeblood of agriculture in Mykonos. These mills are use in power generation in order to grind the agricultural produce. But we wouldn’t put up these windmills if not for their locations. This is a great spot for capturing the sunsets and a wonderful place to soak up the relaxed way of life in Mykonos. Of the 10 windmills remaining, seven are regularly maintained. Get more information on Mykonos Windmills.

#4 - Paradise Beach

Probably the most popular beach on the island (also the best known nude beach), the numerous visitors can enjoy sun and sea, along with high level services and various facilities. “As everywhere in Mykonos, bars with loud music, taverns, beach bars and cafes, sea sport facilities and a scuba diving school are available. With such a noise and movement there is always the atmosphere of a continuous party.” For more details on the paradise, go to Mykonos Beach and Paradise Mykonos.

#5 - Little Venice

Is it time to party? We think so. And where better to start up your nights from those long sightseeing days than living it up in Little Venice? Little Venice is a picturesque neighborhood at the southwest end of the port and owes its name to the fact that many of the island’s wealthy early captains built their houses directly on the sea.
